Squirrel Archeologists

Squirrels in California are being credited with unearthing historical artifacts at Maidu Indian Interpretive Center. The Maidu Center allows people to understand how Native American's lived thousands of years ago. The squirrels dug up what appears to be either a tool or ceremonial object.

Park officials believe there are many more similar artifacts to be found on the property. However, it is illegal to dig on park property - well, at least if you are a human. "We only find what the squirrels are giving us right now. And that's OK. We don't want to dig." said Park Specialist Chuck Kritzon.

While it makes no sense to me whatsoever, that an agency concerned with teaching others about ancient Native Americans wouldn't want to dig for artifacts that would help them do their job, it is nice to know that some friendly squirrels are willing to do the dirty work for them.
